The weather these past two days have finally, and unfortunately, turned to fall. The weather in the mornings is cool enough that sweaters are needed, and long sleeves as well. It is bittersweet, as fall is often my favorite season, but summer is a time of warmth and happiness that we would rather not have end just yet. Even down here in Long Island, where the weather stays warmer longer, it seems summer has finally slipped us by.

Yesterday we didn’t have proper sweaters and spent the morning wait for the school bus huddled together for warmth, but today Alistair was ready with his hoodie on. We were even chilly with them and huddled together again trying to keep cozy. It might be time to pull out the fall and winter jackets already, which is a little heartbreaking.

Ariana still has her cough, and was sent home from school yesterday with firm instructions not to come back until it’s completely gone. At least she got her pictures taken! She tried to insist she was better today, but alas couldn’t hold in her coughs. Arthas is still sick with the same cough, but thankfully Arin and Alistair haven’t caught it, though Alistair was out with a sore throat last week.

The leaves on the trees have gone from vibrant lashings of greenery towards more sparse yellow-green and they blow off at the slightest breeze. The trees here don’t turn beautiful colors like back home in Massachusetts or Maine, at least not many of them. Across the street one ancient tree has turned subtle shades of orange and brown, but everything else still looks green enough that you can trick yourself into thinking late summer is still here.

We’re hoping to go apple picking tomorrow before the weekend crowds from the city comes in, and I hope there are still some apples on the trees… because it’s warmer down here I’m not sure how apple season is affected, but by the end of September many varieties up north have already fallen, and only a few late season varieties remain in early October. Hopefully there will be some for us to pick, or we will be stuck buying out of bins (or just sticking to apple cider donuts!).
The local moms club has a pumpkin picking event in two weeks, perhaps we will go get pumpkins on our own before that – and I do want to try to get some local potatoes, sweet potatoes, and corn. We haven’t been to farm stands much this year, and I’d like to visit some before they all close for the winter. Looking forward to a fun fall weekend!
